Nuclear reactors create huge amounts of energy which is used to produce electricity to boil your kettle, watch TV or charge your mobile. Lots of water is used to keep the nuclear reactors cool, and if there’s no water available then the fuel and the special rods that keep the fuel inside will melt and can set off an explosion with dangerous chemicals and radiation floating in the air and in water. My research looks at making a very thin film which can be stuck onto the outside of fuel rods to protect the rods and the uranium fuel from melting if there is a loss of water and will help prevent a possible explosion.

Every day is a different day for me which makes my work all the more enjoyable and rewarding. My day involves a mix of reading books and online journals to see what other people have already done which will help me with my work. I also do lots of experiments (which is the fun part) where I use big and expensive machines to look at what materials are made of and what it tells us about its strength. As part of my project, I attend large conferences to talk about my work and where it can lead to.
