There are some infections that are very dangerous to pregnant women because they can infect the baby as well as the mother. This might cause the baby to develop problems as it grows inside the mother, or even kill the baby. Rubella (which is also called German Measles) is an example of this. If a pregnant woman gets German Measles her baby might have problems with its heart or eyes. Even something which we think of as trivial like chicken pox can cause a lot of harm to the baby and cause brain damage.

There are some infections that can cause a miscarriage (the baby dies and the pregnancy is lost). Some of these are picked up from animals so pregnant women have to avoid contact with cat poo, sheep and pigs as these can pass on these bugs.
