Cancer can be treated in lots of ways. Usually the first thing that doctors try to do is remove the tumour by doing an operation to cut it out. Then they will use treatments that kill any cells that are dividing (a cancer is just a group of cells that divide, divide, divide and do nothing else). This can be done by blasting them with radiation (radiotherapy) or by drugs that kill dividing cells (chemotherapy). These treatments are really nasty and make the patient feel very ill.

There are other ways of treating cancer but these are the most common.

In my field of research, scientists are developing brand new ways to treat cancer using strong light from lasers.

The light can be used either like a knife to cut out tumours, to shrink or destroy a tumour by heating it up, or by activating a chemical that kills only the cancer cells.

Lasers are more precise and exact than knives. The tissue near a laser cut is not affected since there is little contact with skin or other tissue, therefore the patient recovers faster.

I’d say curing cancer is different to treating it.
We have many treatments available as Simon says. These can be very effective for many people and cure their cancer (return them to good health cancer free). I’d say curing cancer means finding the cause. The problem is that can be different for everyone. Whilst a treatment might work well it might not change the cause for the person meaning the cancer can come back.
The more research that is done the more causes we will discover and this will allow new treatments to be developed.
