      Hi mizzlily,
I get about 30 days holiday a year in Japan. About half of these I can take whenever I want and the other half are for public / bank holidays and for when the university is closed.

I am really lucky because my job gives me more holiday than most people get. I have 30 days holiday, plus all of the UK holidays (bank holidays, Christmas etc) and a few days at Easter and Christmas when the University closes. My big problem is that my job is often so busy that I don’t have time to take all of my holiday in a year and so I often have some unused days left over at the end of the year.

I’m a PhD student, so I get around six weeks holiday a year. So long as I finish the work I need to do, I can take it whenever I wish. That’s the great thing about it.

I get 28 days holiday a year plus bank holidays. Like with many jobs I need to plan my holidays a little carefully. If I know I have experiments only I can do then obviously I can’t take holidays. Luckily most scientists plan their own time so it’s easier to make sure they aren’t happening when you want to be on hooliday! I’m also lucky to have some good technicians in my lab, if I’m just off for a day or two they will look after things for me : )

I’m a PhD student too, so I can take holidays whenever I like (8 weeks it says in my contract). I would never be able to take all that time though because I only have 3 years to complete my research, so don’t want to take too much time off! My supervisor also has to agree (and she usually does!).
