Hi Dragontamer- good to catch up with you again.

Personally I do not believe that there is an afterlife or a soul. Humans are amazing animals whose brains have become so complex that we can take control of our environment and change it to suit our needs. This has made our lives easier and we don’t have to worry about predators in the way that other species do. Our brains then got the chance to evolve in such a way that we can dream, imagine, invent, speculate and see things from the point of view of others. This is what we call ‘consciousness’ and the way we think of ourselves almost makes us feel like there is a part of us (the soul) that is not really part of our bodies.

My belief is that when we physically die, our minds die too. I am hoping that when the time comes it will be a bit like falling deeply asleep only to know no more.

      Hi Dragontamer!

I’m with Simon – I also don’t believe in an afterlife or a soul.

I think that our mind is just a product of a working brain and that once the brain is no longer working, the qualities that we call the “mind” or the “soul” (for example, emotions, character) just disappear.

So when our body stops working, our “soul” also stops existing.

But just because someone has died, I don’t think that means that they stop influencing the world. Their impact continues through people’s memories of them, and all the ways they contributed to the world when they were alive, whether that is through a great scientific discovery or just by being a great friend to someone.

I don’t really believe in the after life either, for the same reasons are Simon and Susan. I do like to think that certain people, like my gran, are looking down on me though. In fact I think the after life is a very important concept to some people who are alive.
Sadly it’s a question we will probably never know the answer to.
